New Grand Rapids Bookshop The Gathered Shelf Opens Its Doors on Buchanan Avenue

A former online-and-appointment used book operation in Grand Rapids has become a walk-in bookstore. The Gathered Shelf, run by Troy and Julia, held its official grand opening on October 24 and 25 at 1409 Buchanan Ave SW, Suite 4.

From appointment-only sales to a public storefront

For about five years, the owners operated a used book business called The Last Chapter out of a warehouse on 3 Mile Road. Customers had to schedule a visit to browse, buy wholesale pallets, pick up hand-selected bundles at local markets, or order online. A legal name change last July prompted the rebrand to The Gathered Shelf, and with it came a move to an open retail space that the public can visit without an appointment.

What shoppers will find

The store describes itself as an inclusive, LGBTQ+-friendly bookshop. Its shelves combine new releases, gently used copies and vintage finds. The shop also carries gifts and specialty Turkish towels. Wholesale warehouse pickups remain available during regular weekday hours for customers who relied on the earlier model.

Getting there during road construction

Construction delays pushed back the opening, and roadwork in the area is still ongoing. The owners have posted guidance on their social media pages about routes around the work and where to park, which is worth checking before a visit.
