Hastings College Launches $120,000 Vocal Scholarship Honoring Longtime Music Director Hayes Fuhr

Hastings College has created a four-year music scholarship worth $120,000 per recipient, named for Hayes M. Fuhr, who led the college's music program for nearly five decades. The inaugural award is limited to vocal performance, with five incoming students set to be chosen for Fall 2027 enrollment.

What the Scholarship Offers

The Hayes M. Fuhr Music Scholarship pays $30,000 a year and is renewable for four years. College officials describe it as the highest tier of its music awards, and they say it is intended to strengthen the institution's choral tradition by drawing talented singers to its ensembles.

Who Can Apply

The scholarship is open to current high school seniors who plan to enroll at Hastings College in fall 2027 and take part in vocal ensembles. Because only five awards will be made for the 2027-28 academic year, decisions are being handled on a rolling basis, and the college strongly encourages early applications.

  • Initial application and audition materials are due by Dec. 1, 2026.
  • Renewal each year depends on active participation in Hastings College vocal ensembles.
  • Audition requirements, submission guidelines and full eligibility criteria are posted at hastings.edu/fuhrscholarship.

A Legacy Tied to the Music Program

Fuhr's decades of leadership shaped a choral program whose reputation extended well beyond the campus, and the scholarship is framed as a lasting tribute to that work. Dr. Wayne Riggs, vice president of academic affairs, said the award is meant to keep Fuhr's commitment to music education opening doors for exceptionally talented vocalists. The college's broader music program offers training across vocal and instrumental disciplines within a liberal arts setting.
