On the 6th of December 1949 Huddie William Ledbetter (known to the world as Lead Belly) passed away in New York City after struggling from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), or Lou Gehrig's disease (a motor neuron disease). Lead Belly is buried in the Shiloh Baptist Church cemetery, in Mooringsport, Louisiana, 8 miles (13 km) west of Blanchard, in Caddo Parish. He is honored with a statue across from the Caddo Parish Courthouse, in Shreveport.
Dylan payed tribute to Lead Belly in one of his first songs: "Here's to Cisco and Sonny and Leadbelly too..."
