Kokomo group pictureThe New Zealand group Kokomo has a history of more than 25 years of performing and have produced about 15 albums with various combinations of band members. Two regulars in their albums are Derek Jacombs (lead vocals, guitar) and Nigel Masters (upright bass). There are now six NZ albums involving Derek and Nigel which have Dylan covers including the first ever NZ all-Dylan album titled In The Well which was released in 2008.

As well as performing in the Kokomo group, Derek Jacombs and Nigel Masters have a duo called The Self-Righteous Brothers.

Derek says in the liner notes to In The Well that “There have always been two musical constants at Kokomo shows – playing old blues tunes and playing the songs of Bob Dylan. I can’t even begin to count the number of Dylan songs we’ve approached at one time or another.”

Their website is a treasure trove of information about the Kokomo members and their music which is best described as “blues and beyond”. A pre-eminent NZ music critic has said about their performances “Wry, satirical, apocalyptic... rooted in acoustic traditions, though not bound by them” (Nick Bollinger – in the NZ Listener).

The band is located in New Zealand’s Bay of Plenty (Tauranga) and have been making music for more than 25 years – celebrated this year (2016) at the Tauranga Jazz Festival with a 25th anniversary concert of blues, jazz and roots music. And there was a release of a twin CD set Batten Down the Hatches – A Kokomo Collection – celebrating their music from 1991 to 2016.
