The 70's: Folkrock, Progrock, The Festivals, Punk
In the seventies several Flemish artists were successful both in the genre of popular songs (Willy Sommers, John Terra, Salim Seghers) as the more folk-oriented music. The late 60s and early 70s created a generation of entertainers, such as Wannes Van de Velde, Zjef Vanuytsel, Kris De Bruyne, William Vermandere, Wim De Craene, Jan De Wilde, Jan Puimege, Miek en Roel, Tim Visterin, Johan Verminnen and young Raymond van het Groenewoud, who would score a huge rockhit several years later with "Meisjes".
Popular in the humorous genre were The Strangers, who, with often socially critical lyrics in the Antwerp dialect, sang existing pop melodies. Thus akin brought people like Ivan Heylen and Walter De Buck folksy and humorous music, often in some dialect.
In the international scene rock music sold well - more specifically hard rock and progressive rock. Belgium had its equivalent of successful bands like Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple with a band called Irish Coffee. Their plates are now sought-after collectibles. Lesser Belgian artists knew really great success in the progressive rock scene. Groups such as PAZOP, Arkham or Cos remained known only within a limited circle, and would years later be retrieved from the archives. Only the Walloon Machiavel had a reasonable success. Univers Zero released his first music at the end of the seventies. This band would get the next decades have worldwide recognition within its genre. An artist like Marc Moulin often mixed rock, jazz, folk and electronic elements and was in several projects running, including the electro pop group Telex.
In 1972, the Belgian group The Chakachas scored a worldwide hit with the disco song Jungle Fever andn 1974, for the first time the music festival Torhout-Werchter was organized. It would become the biggest rock festival in Belgium. Bands like U2, R.E.M., Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and Metallica performed here several times. The festival took place in two town in Belgium, in the same weekend. The line up for saturday or sunday would swap.
Dylan performed here on July 7 and 8 1990 as part of the European Summer Festival Tour. Although there were mostly international performances the platform also accommodates domestic talent. The small festival Folk Dranouter was first held in 1975; it would develop into a major festival in the genre. In 1975, millions worldwide were dreaming romantics away at Francis Goyas hit Nostalgia. Also chansonniers as Frédéric François, Frank Michael, Art Sullivan and Claude Barzotti continued to perform well.
The punk movement emerged in the mid-70s in England. This new music was performed in Belgium through band like The Kids and Red Zebra. In the French-speaking part Plastic Bertrand stood out with his worldwide smash hit “Ça Plane pour moi”.
