Mavis Staples & Johnny Lang - Gotta Serve Somebody
On July 10, 1939 Mavis Staples was born in Chicago, IL. Mavis wasn’t only a great gospel and rhythm & blues singer, but also an actress, and civil rights activist. She has recorded and performed with her family's band The Staple Singers, and also as a solo artist.
Mavis and Bob Dylan go back a long, long way. In ‘Mavis!’ the 2015 documentary about her and the Staple Singers she reveals that in 1963 Bob even proposed to her during the rehearsals for a TV special. She turned him down feeling she was too young, though he continued to pursue her for several years.
At age 78 Mavis Staples is still regularly touring (tomorrow she will be playing in France at the Cahors Blues Festival). In June and July 2016 she went on a six weeks double bill tour with Dylan and his band.
